• So the book opens up with Hammond?? Well ok????? OK. whatever. WHATEVER. Novik’s mode of narration is totally up to her, no matter how sort of jarring that was.
• I counted 14 pages of Laurence’s genuine happiness before he goes back to his worrisome self. :’)
• also RIP Laurence’s glorious hipster beard. (Preview - Chapter 2)
• also dang is arthur hammond really unlikable!!!!
• hahaha I really like Shen Li???? for not being materialistic, especially for a dragon. I wonder if long range courier dragons like her are really…. out there, in terms of dragon-ness. It’s really endearing.
• I really want to know more about Gong Su. It must have been really rough on him, being able to cook for such an honorary dragon, but having to go through the shit that… idk… is not really as cracked up as it was?  I bet he misses his family a whole lot, even when you do take it from a cultural perspective where family is everything. :(
• BUT YEAH LAURENCE LAYING SOME VERBAL SMACKDOWNS. (re: Blincoln and Emily/Demane)   and that part at the beginning when Hammond holds out the golden bars and he just freezes— OH, DEAR HEART. I’m so proud of him for declining them (at first). SO PROUD… ;___;
• the exchange between Laurence and Temeraire — “Do you want to go?” / “Would you rather stay?” — ACK ACK ACK ACK MY FEELINGS??!?!?! I like that their trying to navigate their relationship and still haven’t quite achieved full understanding yet, but they both know it and now, I think, both are really wary about their own and each other’s happiness and I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS… /dry heaves
